My Brother’s First NHL Game

As told by Justin Maroon

St. Louis Roller Hockey News

STLrollerhockeynews@gmail.com

St. Louis native Pat Maroon played his first NHL game October 25thfor the Anaheim Ducks.  Pat is a hockey player that attributes a lot of his skills to the sport of roller hockey.  This is a first hand article from his older brother Justin’s view.  Congratulations to Pat and his family on his first NHL game and hopefully a great career!

We arrived to the United Center about 2 hours early so we were able to catch warm-ups.  We needed to get ready for an extremely awesome and emotional roller coaster.  After warm-ups my dad and I were pretty quiet and soaking it in when all of the sudden the starting lineups came across the Jumbotron.  My dad looks at me and says, "He's starting?  He's starting?  He's really starting?”

So after hearing that the anxiety kicked in and blood pressure went up.  After the national anthem, which in Chicago is the coolest thing ever, all the starters were skating around and I noticed Pat was standing still with his head down for a good 10 seconds.  This was odd, but then he moved.  Nerves were going as they dropped the puck and all I could think about was when is this shift going to end, because getting that first shift out of the way is huge.

I'm sure other things were going through my head but I can’t remember.   It was all a blur at times.  Watching him was just the best thing a brother/best friend could ever imagine.  It was SURREAL.  On my way up to Chicago all I could think about were the countless hockey trips we made heading north on 55 with the Meramec Sharks organization.  I never thought as a kid I would be taking that same route to watch my brother’s first NHL game.  Alright, to be honest I was very emotional, but if I wasn’t then I wouldn’t be human.

It was an amazing feeling watching my baby brother, who is only 16 months apart from me, battle through weight issues, and hometown negativity from people…who should be supporting him…playing on the same line as Cory Perry and Ryan Getzlaf.  It was awesome.

Roller hockey has played a huge part of Pat’s development.  His hands are unreal and he knows he got those from roller.  Plus seeing him on the same NHL team as Bobby Ryan, who is a Tour Blast alumnus, is good for the sport of roller hockey.  I thought he played well and learned a lot from the game.  I had dinner with him afterwards and had a brother-to-brother talk with him.  If I were to sum up that conversation with a sentence it would be this; the reason he is where he is today is because of family, friends, believers, and haters.

MOIHA Meeting - October 12th 7 PM @ All American

The 2012 season kick off meeting will be held Thursday, October 13 at the All American Sports Bar.  The meeting will start at 7 PM sharp and any coaches, managers or board members may attend.  Some of the topics to be discussed are:
  • Junior high season options
  • High school dates
  • Special events for the upcoming season
We look forward to meeting with all of you to discuss the various changes we plan in implementing during the upcoming season.

SLUH Wins First Title

SLUH won their first MOIHA title last night as they defeated a tough Seckman team 8-3 in the Tier 2 final.  Supported by a loud student body, SLUH showed they came to play from the start of the game and did not let up until the game was over.  Both teams demonstrated why they belonged in the championship game.  Seckman will bring back a seasoned team next year and should compete for a championship at tier 1 or 2.

Three-Peat for Francis Howell Central

Francis Howell Central made it three in a row Friday night at All American Sports Mall by winning a tight game against Wentzville.  Playing short handed, the experienced crew from Central scored early and often to get distance on Wentzville.  Wentzville came on strong at the end but was unable overcome the early deficit.  With key players like Cory Kettler returning, Wentzville will be the team to beat next year.
